"Latinas for Trump" — Disputed¶
Multiple English-language outlets (Crooks and Liars, Daily Boulder, Al Bawaba) describe Vergara as "founder of Latinas for Trump." Vergara explicitly denied this, calling it a lie. No primary Colombian source (Semana, El Espectador, Infobae Colombia) corroborates the claim. No independent evidence of a formal organization exists.
Assessment: The label appears to be social media framing that went viral in English-language coverage. Her pro-Trump alignment is real; the "founder" title is unverified. Use "pro-Trump Colombian congresswoman," not "Latinas for Trump founder."
The Irony¶
Before detention: Vergara publicly celebrated Trump's return. Colombian social media users claim she "celebrated when ICE detained her own compatriots" — primary-source documentation of specific prior statements not found, but her conservative party "openly aligned itself with the US Republican Party."
After detention (Feb 13-17, 2026):
- Emotional video: "Como madre, les pido ayuda" (As a mother, I'm asking for your help)
- "I have been living for weeks what thousands of Colombians have suffered this last year"
- Wrote to President Gustavo Petro (left-wing president she opposes) requesting intervention

Petro's response: Called it a "paradox" but directed consular assistance anyway — "No importa la paradoja" (The paradox doesn't matter).
Her reframing: Rather than acknowledging contradiction, she claimed she had always supported "due process and humane treatment": "Denunciar una injusticia no es hipocresía; es coherencia y es dignidad." (Reporting an injustice is not hypocrisy; it is coherence and dignity.)

This case is useful for one thing: demonstrating that the enforcement apparatus does not distinguish between allies and targets. Rafael Vergara did everything "right" — legal entry, work permit, SSN, asylum application, no criminal record — and was detained at 4 AM on a highway. His mother's political alignment provided zero protection.
